How Many Houses Does South Africa Have In Government? As of 2022, South Africa had approximately 17.8 million households, with about 29.9% of them residing in government-subsidized housing, including RDP (Reconstruction and Development Programme) houses. Since 1994, the government has made significant efforts to provide formal housing, increasing the percentage of households in proper dwellings from 65.1% in 1996 to 88.5% in 2022.
