When you've gotten your bearings, you may go hiking, trail jogging, or mountain biking in the nearby hills. Hiking trails, picnic areas, and campsites dot the arid scenery of nearby Cave Creek Regional Park. A birding excursion, a fitness trek, or a stroll among the wildflowers is planned for most Saturdays. To the dordle north of town, at Spur Cross Ranch, you'll find a similarly cactus-covered terrain with pathways suitable for walking, biking, and even riding a horse. There are also organized group excursions available, such as the classic Desert 101 Walk. The seemingly impossible Balanced Rock and Cathedral Rock may be seen from the Brown's Ranch Trail in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve to the southeast.
