Global SeaweedSTAR- Building a progressive management pathway for seaweed biosecurity - Dr. Elizabeth Cotier-Cook
Hello Elizabeth,
It catches my interest when you talked about biosecurity, one of them is about the key challenges identified related to the biosecurity issue. It is indeed important to establish disease management in seaweed farming to overcome the occurance of ice-ice disease. In Indonesia, it usually arises during the transitional season, it becomes 'normal' occurance in Indonesia. Certain farmers or seaweed practitioners have their own way to deal with this issue.
There are seaweed farmers who practice planting rotation since they believe that the ecosystem in the surrounding area needs some time to replenish themselves. And it is believed it becomes a way to mitigate the disease occurance, though no proven scientific evidence so far. Others have even tried to plant the seaweed in the deeper colomn to avoid 'direct contact with sunlight' in the upper layer of water colomn and, and or the presence of fresh water due to high precipitation and/or river streams from mainland. From that point of view, a quick mitigation exists.
Perhaps, a guideline for biosecurity measurement and management integrated with the Good Aquaculture Practice manual might come up as an idea, since GAP has already existed, and it is also certified by the government. Just a thought.

Thank you for the nice talk. The initiatives of Global SeaweedSTAR has been extremely helpful not only for identifying new pathogens that led to great losses in seaweed production. In fact, it has been a great platform and resource for the researchers and practitioners. From your experience, how feasible is it to follow biosecurity guidelines when every country has its own different policies and legislations, many I believe would have no biosecurity roadmap. Do you think capacity building among the farmers can be the key to implement these policies?
